Julie Hahn

 

Ph.D., her research fields are literature, film and choreography. Co-director, choreographer and dancer of the Baejjahn Dance company (founders Jean-Baptiste Baele and Julie Hahn), based in Brussels. Since 2019 the company is in residence at Maison Maurice Béjart Huis, in Brussels. In 2020, it became responsible for the Maison's choreographic center, called Artinchor.
Julie and Jean-Baptiste are interested in the dialogue between different artistic forms, including the relationship between literature and choreographic art, the hybrid nature of genres and trans-disciplinarity. In their artistic approach, they carry out the experimentation and integrate a playful dimension.

In 2019 they created Ars est vita, vita est ars, adaptation of text extracts from the first novel by the Belgian author Jacques De Decker.

The piece Tuffo nel caos (March 2019) is inspired by brief free-form poems written by Julie. In 2020, the creation project called FOS is a choreographic adaptation of the novel Mon corps mis nu (2013) by the author Stéphane Lambert.
Recently they created the performance D-bloq and started the work in progress Hawa.
A collaboration between Action Hybride and Maison Béjart is planed for 2021, it is inspired by Salvador Dali’s painting Soft Watches.
For the residence-programm Terra Rossa in 2021, the current works treat the themes of resistance in Rezista and immigration in Entre les deux, Pandore (s’en) balance.

REZISTA Baejjahn Dance Company

​

Duration: 30-45 min.

Framework: research project for a residence with «Terra Rossa» for Summer 2021. 

For performers/dancers: variable according to budget (2 to 6).

Possibility one or two artists from the host country, for example Sicilians, can join the company as part of this performance.

Our title in Romanian means «resist», in French does not exist in this orthographic form. This intentional choice aims to emphasize the symbolic elaboration and the device of the imaginary and to give an opening on the polysemia of this word. The «Z» is an alveolar African consonant
Its attributes relate to turbulence, vibration and depth. By thinking of the multiple meanings of the verb «resist», we immediately recognize the values and/or associations of positive and negative ideas that it generates.


We look at the philosophy of existence, ethics and social. Among the many fields to which the word refers, the many themes that it allows to address, we have chosen to put it in relation to another ambivalent term that also arises from a symbolic elaboration and a device of the imaginary, the «frontier» that involves means such as “passing, crossing and crossing”. The research has as its starting point the myth, which, in its versatility, recalls in particular the link with the original.

In this performance project «Rezista» in correlation with the idea of «border», leads us to question the myth of Icarus and its avatars in the 21st century and to consider «Rezista» as the personification of Antigone, its mythical function and create an avatar by renewing the interpretation, adapted to the existence in the 21st century under the influence of digitalization and media.

The development of the scenario draws from the reservoir of everyday existence, situations that sometimes seem trivial and yet are not insignificant.

We build history from the forces at stake in the dichotomy of “resist” and “yield”. The situations represented in the performance are related to the synonyms of these words, separated by the idea of a border, and their synonyms: «Resist» implies nuanced ways of acting like “to confront, to stand up, to measure, to suffer, to hesitate, to stiffen, to survive, to defend, to respond, to suffer....

Since childhood, each individual has been forced to «resist» multiple situations that concern nature and human conditions, the creation of relationships with the Other, the construction of identity and that of an existence.

There, themes such as love, success or health describe some key situations. It is enough to review the New Year vows generally exchanged between individuals to notice the values that seem to dominate mainly civilizations/cultures: health, happiness and prosperity.

They thus describe the framework of the issues considered fundamental for the vast majority, but what are the priorities that each one sets in his life?
If everyone agrees that health is fundamental and placed at the top of the list, what about the reality of the facts? How and where are the forms of resistance and/or abandonment defined, swimming in the current or against the current of the systems set up by the companies?

There, themes such as love, success or health describe some key situations. It is enough to review the New Year vows generally exchanged between individuals to notice the values that seem to dominate mainly civilizations/cultures: health, happiness and prosperity.
